Review Of Indulge Chocolate Ice Cream 1L

Super-premium brands like Haagen-Dazs make impressive ice cream, but they’re not cheap. If you want something fancy without paying a fortune, Aldi’s Indulge range of 1L tubs may be up your alley.

I bought every tub in their new range and got busy eating. This review looks at the Indulge Chocolate Ice Cream 1L. Find out if it’s worth a space in your freezer.

Is the ice cream any good?

A one-litre container of Indulge Chocolate Ice Cream is well worth trying out. The creamy, smooth ice cream has plenty of cocoa flavour.

At $5.99, this product offers good value. It doesn’t match brands like Connoisseur and Haagen-Dazs in terms of ingredient quality, but it makes a reasonable effort. Consumers looking to reduce their shopping bills can get a premium-style product at an affordable price.

There is choc fudge ripple which makes up 8% of the tub. I found it hard to find and looking at the pictures I took, there’s no sign of it. In saying that, I still enjoyed this product.

It looks creamy and delicious in the bowl.

Is there a downside to this ice cream?

My main problem with this ice cream is its ingredient list. Figuring out the primary ingredients is difficult.

The confusion comes from how the ingredients are organised. They’ve lumped together four items – Cream, Milk Fat, Skim Milk Concentrate, and Milk Solids – under the term “Dairy Ingredients.”

Brands often do this to push less attractive ingredients like water or sugar down the list.

This ice cream isn’t perfect, but it isn’t bad for the price.

Pros

  • Plenty of chocolatey flavour.
  • Creamy, indulgent consistency.
  • Excellent value for money.

Cons

  • A lot of air is churned into this tub.
  • The ingredients list could be clearer.

What alternatives are there in supermarkets?

Connoisseur Belgian Chocolate 1L: A smoother and denser, better-quality ice cream. You’ll pay roughly double for it, though.

Bulla Murray St Chocolate Fudge Ripple 1L: Another more expensive product, it’s made with fresh milk, cream, and free-range egg yolks.

Streets Blue Ribbon Classic Chocolate 2L: A cheaper option for those wanting a basic chocolate ice cream without any sauce or extras added. Its smooth texture and subtle flavour are likely to be a hit with all ages.

Ingredients

The primary ingredients in this tub are full cream milk and cream. Milk solids also add body to the frozen dessert, producing a softer texture that scoops easily. The ice cream contains 8% dark choc fudge ripple and 4% cocoa powder.

Ingredient list: Dairy Ingredients [Cream (Milk), Milk Fat, Skim Milk Concentrate, Milk Solids], Water, Liquid Sugar (Sugar, Water), Dark Choc Fudge Ripple (8%) [Sugar, Water, Glucose Syrup, Vegetable Fat, Sweetened Condensed Milk (Milk, Sugar), Cocoa Powder, Cocoa Liquor, Natural Flavours, Thickener (440), Salt], Glucose Syrup (Wheat), Cocoa Powder (4%), Emulsifier (471), Stabilisers (412, 415, 410).

Milk fat

Milk fat plays a vital role in the texture and mouthfeel of ice cream. More of it results in a creamier, smoother texture associated with superior products.

Indulge Chocolate Ice Cream contains 13.0% milk fat. That’s much higher than family-pack ice creams like Peters, Woolworths, Coles, or Streets Blue Ribbon. It also places this pack in a similar category to premium brands like Murray Street and Connoisseur, and super-premium brands like Haagen-Dazs.
