Review Of Bulla Creamy Classics Vanilla Ice Cream 2L

Family-sized two-litre tubs of ice cream often use water as their main ingredient. They have so little dairy that it can’t be called ice cream.

The Bulla Creamy Classics range is different. With Aussie milk and cream as the two main ingredients, its a step up from other economy 2L packs. But does it taste any good?

I bought a container of Bulla Creamy Classics Vanilla Ice Cream and got busy eating. This review looks at whether it’s worth a spot in your home’s freezer.

Is Creamy Classics Vanilla Ice Cream any good?

Creamy Classics Vanilla ice cream offers excellent bang for buck. It provides a large pack size for families that costs less than most premium pints.

The ice cream has plenty of vanilla flavour without the intensity of some vanilla bean products.

It’s also easy to taste the dairy, something you won’t get from products like Peters Original or the supermarket private label 2L tubs.

The flavour is excellent.

The texture is much closer to what you’d expect from a premium brand. It’s indulgent and slightly chewy, although less smooth than products like Haagen-Dazs.

Buying Creamy Classics Vanilla makes sense if you’re after quantity, especially when it’s on promotion.

Why is it cheaper than premium brands?

With the use of quality ingredients and a large pack, you may wonder why it costs less than smaller tubs of ice cream like Murray Street and Haagen-Dazs.

While various factors are at play, a big reason is the amount of air that gets whipped into the ice cream. Premium brands incorporate less air, giving it a denser, more indulgent consistency. Cheaper brands add lots of air, reducing their costs.

As you can see from the table below, for every 100ml, you only get 46g of Creamy Classics ice cream. As a comparison, Murray Street has 68g.

Streets Blue Ribbon Ice Cream 2L: Another cheaper option that’s popular with Australian consumers.

Connoisseur Classic Vanilla 1L: A more expensive tub that’s creamier, denser, and more indulgent.

There are currently six variants in the Creamy Classics range.

Ingredients

The Bulla Creamy Classics range is made in Australia using fresh, locally sourced dairy. The primary ingredients are milk and cream, providing a creamier, more premium product.

Cheaper alternatives usually include more water, reconstituted skim milk, and other low-cost ingredients.

Egg is not used in the Bulla Creamy Classics range of ice cream. However, the pack has a “may contain egg” allergen statement.

Ingredients list: Fresh milk, fresh cream (milk) (20%), sugar, water, maltodextrin, milk solids, emulsifier (471), thickeners (guar gum, carrageenan), flavour, colour (annatto).

Milk fat

Milk fat plays a vital role in ice cream’s texture and mouthfeel. More of it results in a creamier, smoother texture associated with superior ice cream.

Bulla Creamy Classics Vanilla Ice Cream contains 10% milk fat. That’s higher than most family-pack ice creams like Peters or Blue Ribbon Streets but lower than more expensive offerings like Murray Street or Haagen-Dazs.
