Review Of Monarc Silver Scoop Vanilla Ice Cream 2L

While Aldi sells a range of premium one-litre packs under the Indulge range, they also have a cheaper option. Monarc Silver Scoop is a line of two-litre tubs popular with budget shoppers. But is the ice cream any good?

I bought the whole selection to see if they’re worth a spot in your home freezer. This review looks at Monarc Silver Scoop Vanilla Ice Cream 2L.

What’s in the pack?

Silver Scoop Vanilla 2L is an economy pack with at least 25% less fat than regular ice cream. It competes with other budget-friendly, reduced-fat products like Coles, Woolworths, Blue Ribbon, and Peters Original.

Is this ice cream any good?

Silver Scoop Vanilla Reduced Fat Ice Cream is a no-frills, basic ice cream. It has a pleasant, mild flavour that will appeal to kids and those who don’t like punchy vanilla flavour.

However, this tub of Silver Scoop had an unpleasant icy texture that was slightly grainy. It lacked the creaminess you get from similar tubs like Blue Ribbon Creamy Vanilla.

Scooping the ice cream was challenging. It tended to break into bits instead of forming a ball, even when left to soften.

For a similar price, there are better options in the supermarket freezers, including at Aldi.

Other Silver Scoop flavours

  1. Silver Scoop Choc Chip.
  2. Silver Scoop Cookies & Cream.
  3. Silver Scoop Boysenberry.

Why is Monarc Silver Scoop so cheap?

You may wonder why a sizeable two-litre pack of Silver Scoop costs less than smaller containers like Connoisseur and Murray Street.

Using cheaper ingredients helps, but a big reason is the amount of air that gets whipped into the ice cream. Premium brands incorporate less air, providing a denser, more indulgent consistency. Cheaper brands add lots of air, which results in a lighter texture.

As you can see from the table below, for every 100ml, you only get 45g of Silver Scoop ice cream. As a comparison, Haagen-Dazs has 86g.

Ingredients

The main ingredients in this ice cream are reconstituted buttermilk, water, and cream. Milk solids are included to dial up the creaminess.

Ingredient list: Reconstituted Buttermilk (Milk) 34%, Water, Cream (Milk) 15%, Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Milk Solids, Maltodextrin, Thickeners (412, 410, 407a), Emulsifier (471), Vanilla Flavour, Gelatine (From Beef), Natural Colour (160b).

Milk fat impacts ice cream consistency. Higher levels result in a creamier, smoother mouthfeel.

Monarc Silver Scoop Vanilla 2L is a reduced-fat brand. It has less than 6%, which means the product can’t label the front of the pack as “ice cream”.
