Review Of Elato Triple Vanilla Ice Cream 475ml

Elato is a relatively new entrant in Australia’s ice cream market. But it has wasted no time securing supermarket freezer space in our major supermarkets.

I recently had the opportunity to try out their full product range. In this review, I’m focusing on Triple Vanilla, available in a 475ml tub.

Is Elato Triple Vanilla Ice Cream any good?

Elato Triple Vanilla Ice Cream is an excellent pint jam-packed with punchy flavour. Vanilla lovers will appreciate the mix of Heilala Tongan vanilla beans, extract, and flecks. The trifecta of ingredients gives the ice cream a delicious, well-rounded taste.

Aside from flavour, this tub has a lot to like. It ticks many boxes, including earth-conscious packaging, sustainable ingredients, support for OzHarvest, and less added sugar.

It”s got a lot of vanilla flavour.

Is there any downside to this Elato tub?

No ice cream is perfect. The appearance of Elato Triple Vanilla doesn’t look much like vanilla ice cream. It’s closer to coffee. Check out a comparison below of Blue Ribbon (right) and Elato (left).

It’s not a huge deal, but we eat with our eyes – there’s something satisfying about scooping a ball of white vanilla ice cream onto a the plate (or brownie).

I’m sure the team at Elato can fix this. Haagen-Dazs has a similar clean ingredient label and its product is super-white.

Overall, Elato is an enjoyable ice cream that’s well worth trying. It’s great served on its own or alongside other desserts.

Pros

  • Clean ingredients label.
  • Less sugar than most popular brands.
  • Made using sustainable Heilala Tongan vanilla.
  • Australian-made and owned.

Cons

  • Expensive for the pack size.
  • The off-white shade isn’t appealing.
  • Not as scoopable as other super-premium brands.

What are some alternatives?

Coles Irresistible Vanilla Bean 1L: A milder ice cream with roughly five times less vanilla beans. See the Coles Vanilla Bean 1L Review here.

Woolworths Vanilla Bean 1L: Like the Coles tub, it offers decent value for money for consumers wanting premium ice cream at an affordable price. This is what I thought of Woolworths Vanilla Bean 1L tub.

Haagen-Dazs Vanilla 457ml: A super-premium ice cream that has the simplest ingredients list in Aussie stores. This is a review of Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream.

Bulla Murray St Ice Creamery Vanilla Bean 1L: Excellent ice cream and a clean ingredient list. Check out this review of Bulla Murray St Vanilla Bean ice cream here.

Indulge Vanilla Bean 1L: Aldi’s deliciously creamy, smooth ice cream contains tiny flecks of vanilla bean. Possibly the best value vanilla ice cream in Aussie supermarket freezers. See the review of Indulge Vanilla Ice Cream here.

Connoisseur Classic Vanilla Tub 1L: A cheaper product that uses Madagascan vanilla beans in its ice cream. Check out my review of Connoisseur Vanilla here.

Maggie Beer Rich Vanilla Bean 500ml: A similarly priced tub with more dairy content and comparable vanilla bean content.

Ingredients

The main dairy components are milk and cream. Skim milk powder is also used to add structure and make a creamier texture.

  • 25% of the ice cream is cream.
  • 0.6% of the ice cream is Heilala Tongan Vanilla Extract.

Ingredients List: Milk, Cream (25%), Sugar, Skim Milk Powder, Egg Yolk, Prebiotic Fibre (inulin), Heilala Tongan Vanilla Extract (0.6%), Heilala Tongan Vanilla Beans (0.15%), Vanilla Specks (0.1%), Enzyme (lactase), Guar Gum, Carob Bean Gum.

Milk fat

Milk fat plays a vital role in ice cream’s texture and mouthfeel. More of it results in a creamier, smoother texture associated with superior ice cream.

This container of Elato has 11.6%, which puts it above most products sold in Aussie supermarkets. It’s much higher than brands like Peters and Blue Ribbon but lower than super premium tubs like Connoisseur and Haagen-Dazs.
