A pack shot of the Much Moore Awesome Foursome Family Classic Ice Cream

Review Of Much Moore Awesome Foursome Family Classic 2L

Much Moore is a New Zealand brand that’s a relative newcomer to Australian supermarkets. Their “Awesome” range is sold in Woolworths, so I bought and tested every flavour.

This is a review of the Awesome Foursome Family Classic 2L. It’s a fun-sounding, innovative product that I was excited to try. Keep reading to decide if it’s worth a spot in your freezer.

What is Much Moore Awesome Foursome Family Classic?

The tub contains equal quantities of four flavours of ice cream:

  • vanilla.
  • vanilla with cookie pieces.
  • bubblegum with gumdrop jellies.
  • chocolate.

Here are spoonfuls of what you’ll get:

Is the tub any good?

I found Awesome Foursome Family Classic ice cream very disappointing. The concept of four flavours appealed, but the ice cream had an icy consistency. It lacked the creaminess expected from a store-bought ice cream.

It’s hard to know if the grainy, icy texture was the usual ice cream. Or had it been through a tough journey across the Tasman and melted? They’ve won a lot of awards, but I had to judge the tub on how it tasted.

Many people have left scathing reviews on Aussie supermarket websites about the groovy gumdrops flavour tasting synthetic and medicine-like. But I think Much Moore did an excellent job of this flavour, and the jellies were spot on.

The problem is, Goody Gumdrops ice cream is much less prevalent in Australia. I’d guess some Australian consumers got a shock tasting it for the first time.

Summary of customer feedback

We looked at reviews from other people who tried this product and found a lot of positive results. However, there were also plenty of not-so-good comments. This is our summary of what the unimpressed customers thought:

Some customers described the tub as disappointing and not worth the price. There were mentions of an overpowering synthetic bubblegum taste, and a lack of creaminess.

Even though the variety of flavours in one tub was acknowledged as a positive, the execution seems lacking. There were many complaints about flavour, such as vanilla tasting like banana, or the gumdrop flavour being too sweet and the lollies too hard.

A few positive remarks note that children might enjoy it, but adults were generally unimpressed.

What are some similar products to try?

Bulla Creamy Classics 2L (any flavour): the products in this range are a similar-price, but they use fresh dairy and have a much cleaner ingredient list.

Peters Original Neapolitan 2L: if you enjoy a mix of flavours, consider this Peters tub. It’s half the price, but keep in mind it’s a reduced-fat product.

While I love a creative ice cream flavours, Neapolitan makes more sense. With three popular flavours, the whole household is likely to be happy.

It’s also easier to scoop a line of pink, brown, or white. Scooping one quarter of the tub was trickier.

Pros

  • Get four flavours in one tub.
  • Made by a family-owned business.

Cons

  • Not the creamiest ice cream on offer.
  • A lot of numbers in the ingredients list.

Ingredients

The main dairy components of this ice cream are milk solids and milk fat. 2.5% of the tub comprises cookie pieces and 2% gumdrops.

While I’m not a fan of long ingredient lists, it’s important to factor in that four different flavours are in the one pack.

Ingredient list: Ice Cream [Milk Solids (from Milk), Milk Fat (from Cream), Sugar, Glucose (from Maize and/or Tapioca), Cocoa, Vegetable Emulsifiers (477, 471), Vegetable Stabilisers (412, 407a), Colours (150d, 155, 133, 102), Flavour], Cookie Pieces (2.5%) [contains Wheat Flour, Milk Solids, Raising Agents (500, 503), Emulsifier (322 from Soy), Flavour], Fruit Flavoured Jellies (Gumdrops) (2%) [contains Thickener (Gelatine from Beef), Acidity Regulators (296, Citric Acid), Flavour, Colours (102, 110, 122, 133)].

Milk fat

Milk fat impacts ice cream consistency. Higher levels result in a creamier, smoother mouthfeel.

The Much Moore Awesome range has 10% milk fat. That’s comparable to the Coles ice cream range but less than brands like Murray Street, Connoisseur, and Haagen-Dazs

At some point between the manufacturer’s factory and the supermarket freezer, this tub may have been left out to melt. I’ll re-test this range to see if there’s any difference asap.
