Review Of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream 458ml

Ben & Jerry’s is an iconic ice cream brand loved for its imaginative range of flavours. Their pints usually include a lot of extra chunks and swirls to keep things exciting.

I taste-tested the entire range to work out if they live up to the hype. This review looks at Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough 458ml. Find out if it’s worth a spot in your freezer.

Is B&J Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough any good?

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is one of the simpler ice cream flavours in the B&J range. While most have endless swirls, sauces, and chunks, this pint contains vanilla ice cream and cookie dough.

As with most B&J tubs, the vanilla ice cream is smooth, creamy, and hard to fault. I’d love Aussie supermarkets to sell their vanilla pints throughout the country.

There is 16% cookie dough in the pint, along with 1.7% choc chips. That’s a lot of extras mixed in. I found them a distraction from being able to enjoy the ice cream. However, those who can’t get enough dough in their desserts will love this pint.

Pros

  • Cookie dough lovers rejoice!
  • Indulgent, rich ice cream.
  • One small tub lasts longer than you’d expect.

Cons

  • Grainy dough distracts from the ice cream.
  • Expensive for the pack size.
  • Not made in Australia.

What’s the difference between Cookie Dough and Cookie Dough S’Wich Up?

Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough was first invented in 1984 and contains vanilla ice cream with 16% cookie dough. Cookie Dough S’Wich Up was released 25 years later, taking vanilla ice cream and adding 8% sandwich cookies and 3% cookie dough. If you love cookie dough, the original pint is best.

What do other customers think of this ice cream?

I looked at hundreds of online reviews to see what others think of this product. Here’s a summary:

The reviews for Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream are mostly positive. Many praise its delicious flavour and generous cookie dough chunk ratio. It’s described as a go-to ice cream, great for a treat.

There were also critical reviews. One notable criticism is that the ice cream is not dairy-free. Other criticisms include the product being disappointing for the price. This is a common complaint about all the B&J range.

A few reviewers mentioned a preference for less dough. Some also found the dough’s texture strange.

What are some alternatives?

If you want to try a different brand then consider these options:

Haagen-dazs Cookie Dough Chip 457m: Another super-premium pint that has a little less cookie dough but adds chocolate fudge chunks.

Much Moore Awesome Cookie Dough 2L: A much cheaper brand made in NZ. It’s got roughly double the choc chips but a little less cookie dough.

Connoisseur Laneway Sweets Baked Choc Chip Cookie 1L: Try this ice cream with baked choc chip cookies instead of raw dough for something different.

There are a few similar options if you don’t want B&J.

Ingredients

Cream and reconstituted skim milk are the primary dairy ingredients for making this ice cream. The tub contains 16% chocolate chip cookie dough and 1.7% chocolate chips.

Ingredients List: Dairy ingredients [cream (milk), reconstituted skim milk, concentrated skim milk, butter (milk), milk fat], sugars (sugar, brown sugar), wheat flour, egg, oils (coconut, soy), cocoa components (1.4%) (cocoa powder, cocoa mass, cocoa butter), water, molasses, vanilla extract, thickeners (guar gum, carrageenan), natural flavours and flavourings, salt, emulsifiers (soy lecithin), glucose.

Milk fat

Milk fat plays a vital role in ice cream’s texture and mouthfeel. More of it results in a creamier, smoother texture associated with superior ice cream.

Unfortunately, B&J doesn’t disclose the milk fat percentage in their products. I reached out to the company to get this information, but they responded with:

“We cannot give you the exact amount, but it is greater than 10%, meaning it is ice cream under the Australian and New Zealand regulations (Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code – Standard 2.5.6). We hope this information is helpful.”
