Review Of Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked Ice Cream 458ml

Ben & Jerry’s is an iconic ice cream brand loved for its imaginative range of flavours. Their pints usually include a lot of extra chunks and swirls to keep things exciting.

I taste-tested the entire range to work out if they live up to the hype. This review looks at Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked 458ml. Find out if it’s worth a spot in your freezer.

Is B&J Half Baked any good?

Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked ice cream is an innovative pint stuffed with added extras, like most of their range. The pack combines rich chocolate and vanilla ice cream with uncooked cookie dough and chewy baked brownie pieces.

B&J has been churning out Half Baked since 2000, and it’s a classic favourite among many. I can understand why. The ice cream is creamy, smooth, and delicious. What’s more, the combination of baked goods and ice cream is always a winner.

The ice cream is smooth and indulgent, like all the B&J range.

Was there a downside to Half Baked?

The abundance of cookie dough gobs is distracting. Those preferring simpler ice cream may find this pint frustrating. Getting a whole spoonful of ice cream is tricky, as there’s so much going on in the tub.

The dough is also a little grainy too. While you’d expect that from uncooked dough, it gives the ice cream a gritty texture that I didn’t enjoy.

Pros

  • Indulgent, rich ice cream.
  • Perfect for cookie dough lovers.
  • One small tub lasts longer than you’d expect.

Cons

  • Expensive for the pack size.
  • So much dough distracts from the ice cream.
  • The texture is gritty.
  • It’s not made in Australia.

Many appreciate the generous mix of cookie dough and brownie pieces, finding the combination of chocolate and vanilla ice cream hard to stop eating.

Some reviewers expressed dissatisfaction, mentioning a change in recipe and too many mix-ins. The high price point for the pack size also popped up in the occasional review.

What are some alternatives?

Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked is a unique flavour with little direct competition. Consider these products if you want something similar:

Norco Cape Byron Classic Cookie Dough: Vanilla ice cream with pieces of biscuit, cookie dough chunks, and chocolate sauce. This tub has 9% cookie dough.

Much Moore Awesome Cookie Dough 2L: This is a good option if you’re looking for a cheaper family pack with fewer mix-ins.

Halo Top Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough 437ml: A creamy vanilla ice cream with cookie dough bites and choc chips. There’s less sugar cause they use erythritol and stevia. There are also fewer calories as reconstituted skim milk is the primary ingredient.

Ingredients

Cream and skim milk are the primary dairy ingredients for making this ice cream. The tub contains 10% chocolate chip cookie dough and 8% fudge brownies.

Ingredients List: Cream, Water, Sugar, Concentrated Skim Milk, Wheat Flour, Brown Sugar, Cocoa Powder, Egg Yolk, Butter, Soybean Oil, Eggs, Invert Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Molasses, Egg White, Vanilla Extract, Thickener (Guar Gum, Carrageenan), Salt, Natural Flavours and Flavourings, Cocoa Butter, Glucose, Emulsifier (Soybean Lecithin), Raising Agent (Sodium Bicarbonate), Malted Barley Flour.

Milk fat

Milk fat plays a vital role in ice cream’s texture and mouthfeel. More of it results in a creamier, smoother texture associated with superior ice cream.

Unfortunately, B&J doesn’t disclose the milk fat percentage in their products. I reached out to the company to get this information, but they responded with:

“We cannot give you the exact amount, but it is greater than 10%, meaning it is ice cream under the Australian and New Zealand regulations (Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code – Standard 2.5.6). We hope this information is helpful.”
